Nico Rosberg topped Q1 and waiting for Sunday

Melbourne Qualifying postponed to Sunday

The weather havoced the first qualifying session of 2013 in Mebourne, Australia. The qualifying session began after a 30min delay due to heavy rain and water on the track.

Q1 started off in full swing with the Mercedes drivers taking the forefront among the pack inorder to get a good visibility and to measure the track conditions.

Hamilton who was leading the pack of car went off track couple of times and also incurred a rear wing damage while team mate Rosberg set initial benchmark for P1. Van Der Gar had a twitch and hit a wall loosing his nose cone as did Filipe Massa on the Ferrari a few minutes later with a spin. Hamilton was asked to come into the box after his rear wing damage but he stayed on track making few decent laps. Midway through the session the laptimes started to tumble as Vettel, Alonso and Vergne clocked P1.

Button went into intermediates with 5mins to go followed by Alonso and Rosberg. As the session draw to the end Rosberg bounced back to P1 ahead of Alonso and Grosjean while Hamilton managed to sneak into P10 from P16.

After the Q1, the rain started to pour down heavily and the race control decided to delay the start of Q2 by 20mins. As the conditions failed to improve yet another 20mins delay was annouced to start the session at 18:50 local time while the light was fading.

Finallythe stewards decided to hold the Q2 & Q3 sessions of Qualifying on Sunday 11:00hrs local time due to heavy rain and a damp track while expecting a better forecast ahead of the race on Sunday The last time this happened was in Suzuka in 2010.
