Karun´s Karting Karnival, a racing party for the media
August 19th, Chennai: India’s Formula 1 driver Karun Chandhok of Team Lotus threw a party for the media folks with a karting event at Chennai. The event was sponsored by JK Tyre and was attended by many journalists from various media across the country as.
It was a good experience and fun for the journalists who were new to racing and also there were some who never even driven a 4wheeler before. It was aimed to give a firsthand experience to the media professionals about motor racing. The journalists enjoyed the event and some even raced seriously.Karun said “It’s a fun evening I don’t come to India very much. I don’t get to see the people who write up about me throughout the year. It’s a nice evening to catch up and meet people who I’ve only spoken to on the phone or very rarely get to see and also nice chance for a role reversal.”
Asked whether he will drive at the inaugural Indian GP, Karun said “We will wait and see”
About the Indian F1 Track shaping up, Karun commented “It’s coming along ok. It will be a please surprise for the drivers. I’ve been lucky enough for being the only driver to driven it so far. It’s really enjoyable undulating, up and down, blind corners and very interesting layout. It’s a fun place to drive and drivers are really going enjoy it”
Vicky Chandhok, (Karun’s father and FMSCI Chief) said“ I think basically its Karun’s way of saying thank you for all media for the support. He enjoyed doing this in England and wanted to see if it works in India and I just arrived and walked around and every person who took part seemed to have enjoyed it and I think it’s a great thing.”
Asked about the Indian F1 track inspection “Well it’s scheduled for Sept 2nd and we are ok for that”
Sanjay Sharma (Head – JK Motorsport) said “It is a very nice concept because who better than Karun Chandok himself taking this cause of educating people about this sport. He tried it in the UK and he replicated it here. We’ve been doing some professional stuff like the VW Polo Cup race for journalists and we’ve been having races for the journalists for a very long time but doing it at the grass root level for the rookies I think is a fantastic initiative. We think we kind of exposed 20 new people to the sport and these are the 20 people who matter because they all belong to the media fraternity”
