Valentino Rossi wins a rain hit British Grand Prix
The 7 time MotoGP Champion Valentino Rossi won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone for first time in his career under trecherous conditions and extended his championship lead by 12 points over his Yamaha team mate Jorge Lorenzo.
The race was about to start as a dry race but once the warm up lap started the rain fell quite consistently. The riders immediately entered the pits and changed to their wet tryed bikes assuming a start from the pitlane. But due to safety reasons the start was aborted with a delay and the riders had to come for a normal start from their grid positions.
As the red lights turned off, Lorenzo gunned into the lead beating pole man Marquez into C1 with Espargaro third and Rossi fourth while Pedrosa dropped to 6th. Lorenzo was holding the lead with Marquez behind but Rossi was slowly attacking Espargaro. As the conditions on the track were wet Lorenzo and Marquez could not break away and Espargaro overtook Marquez and in a couple of corners Rossi too overtook Marquez. Factory Yamaha rider Rossi then set his move on Pol Espargaro on the Tech3 Yamaha and moved into 2nd and soon Marquez did the same and also overtook Rossi to get into 2nd.
On lap 2 Rossi again overtook Marquez and then started to attack his team mate Lorenzo eventually grabbed the lead by lap 3 and never looked back. Marquez soon overtook Lorenzo and glued to the tail of Rossi while Lorenzo slowly dropped behind. British rider Cal Crutchlow was attacking Lorenzo for 3rd but his run was tarnished by his team mate Jack Miller who took both the bikes to the gravel in an outbraking move.
Rossi and Marquez were edging away from the rest and were trading fastest laps between each other with Rossi looking the strong in the front. As Lorenzo was struggling in the wet the championship fight took a new swing with the Ducati riders Dovizioso and Petrucci getting ahead of Lorenzo while his team mate was leading the race.
With 10 laps to go the race looked set between Rossi and Marquez once again but on lap 11 Marquez made slight mistake trying to keep up with Rossi into Turn 1 and his bike threw him into the gravel ending the race and championship hopes.
After seeing Marquez crash, Rossi slowed his pace by almost a second a lap but Petrucci on the Pramac Ducati, who was having a duel of a life time with fellow Ducati rider Dovizioso was catching up fast with the gap going as low as 1.6secs from 7secs. Rossi soon regained his speed with some fast laps and took the chequered flag 3secs ahead of his compatriots Petrucci and Dovizioso making it an all Italian podium for the second time this season.
Lorenzo finished 4th ahead of Pedrosa in 5th. Home riders Scot Redding and Bradley Smith finished 6th and 7th while Iannone finished 8th. Nicky Hayden finished 12th and was the top Open class rider.
