Double podium for Armaan in Slovakia in FIA GT Series
Chennai, Aug 24: Armaan Ebrahim achieved a double podium in Slovakia as he continued his splendid run in the Blancpain FIA GT Series at the weekend.
Chennai’s Armaan, along with his Spanish teammate Miguel Toril, finished third in both races in the Silver Cup class for drivers under the age of 25 years at the Slovakia Ring. It was their fifth podium finish of the season.
Driving for Fortec Motorsport, Armaan took the start in the first race which was red flagged within one lap due to a horrific accident involving Tomas Enge who rolled multiple times.
The skies opened up and all cars changed to wet weather tyres on the grid before the re–start. Armaan, who qualified second, moved into 8th place and was leading the Silver Cup Class for most part of his stint, and with 2 laps to go before the pit stop, he got hit from behind and dropped a few places.
The race was then red flagged again as conditions became extremely unsafe with the visibility down to almost zero and water logging on the track. On resumption of the 2nd re–start, Miguel Toril put in an equally good performance to take the checkered flag finishing 3rd in Class and 11th Overall out of 22 cars.
In race 2, which was dry, Miguel took the start. Post the Pit stop and driver change Armaan held position till the checkered flag to take 3rd in Class again and a Top Ten finish overall.
“We made steady progress through the weekend and actually for the first time were competitive in the qualifying session,” said Armaan, who is sponsored by JK Tyre.
“The 1st race was quite dramatic with horrible weather conditions and the car was aquaplaning every where. One did not know what would happen even on the straight as it was that bad and visibility was almost zero.,” he added.
“At one point, 4 of us entered and came out of the corner and did a full 360 spin and continued on our way luckily. The 2nd race was dry and quite good to finish 3rd in the Silver Cup Class and a Top 10 finish overall. The car is a lot better now and we definitely look good for the next race in Portugal in 2 weeks time. Coming away from Slovakia with two trophies is not a bad day in the office.”
