Marquez wins Championship despite Lorenzo´s race winning defence

Repsol Honda rookie, Marc Marquez, won the 2013 MotoGP World Championship by taking 3rd place in the final race of the season in Valencia despite Lorenzo winning the race with strongly.

With the title on the line, the race began with Lorenzo zooming to the lead and trying to bunch up the field by slowing the pace of the race making Rossi and Bautista join the attack on Marquez. Perdrosa pursued Lorenzo and attempted several passes, but was unable to make them stick as Lorenzo put a devilish attack to stick with the lead. As the battle became too hot, Dani and Lorenzo touched briefly on lap 10 and this allowed Marc to come through and take the lead with Dani dropping to 5th behind Rossi and Bautista.

Lorenzo was so determined not to give up his title easy and within few laps he re–passed Marquez and could only hope for the young rookie to make a mistake. With Marquez showing maturity and patience while safely in a podium spot, Lorenzo´s title was slipping away lap by lap. On lap 14 Dani was back up to 3rd and he passed Marquez on lap 26 for 2nd spot with Lorenzo 3seconds in front.

Lorenzo crossed the line with almost 4 second lead, the maximum he could do to defend his title with Pedrosa in 2nd and Marquez safely in 3rd taking his first MotoGP crown on his maiden year, becoming the youngest rookie at 20 years 266 days to win the Championship. Rossi finished his usual 4th ahead of Bautista and Bradl with Cructchlow crashing in his last ride for Yamaha before switching to Ducati next year, leaving his team mate Bradely Smith to grab 7th ahead of Ducati riders Hayden, Dovizioso and Pirro rounding up the Top10.
