Fernando Alonso took his Ferrari to victory with his masterly drive in Malaysia
The weather in Sepang, Malaysia is always unpredictable and the track was partly wet due to the rain few hours before. The drivers and teams were prepared for a dry/ wet race.
At the lights Lewis (McLaren) started of cleanly this time unlike Australia and managed to keep Button(McLaren) on the bay but it was Grosjean(Lotus) who rocketed ahead of the two Red Bulls and the Mercedes of Schumacher. As the cars moved to the wet area of the track Grosjean just overdid it and twitched going over the wet kerbs and eventually touching Schumacher causing a spin. The unlucky Michael managed to join the race without damage but dropped to the back of the pack.
As the rain started to come in heavy few cars experienced excursions to the grass and Grosjean loosing it out on the gravel was the first of the retirements of the race. Almost all drivers on the track went in for a wet tyre except Narain Karthikeyan (HRT) who gambled with a wet tyre from the start. Narain who started last on the grid (24th) moved ahead to 10th as most of the drivers had to pit for the tyre.
The Safety car had to come in due to the heavy downpour of rain and by Lap 9 the race was red flagged.
The race restarted almost an hour later under the safe. As the safety car went in after few laps with Hamilton on the lead, Button running 2nd was the first to dive into the pits followed by several others. Hamilton and Alonso pitted the next lap while the latter made a fantastic pitstop as Hamilton lost valuable seconds. Alonso got ahead of Button and Hamilton but Sergio Perez on the Sauber grabbed the lead with a quick pit stop and an earlier gamble on intermediate tyrea. Alonso closed the gap on Perez and went into the lead while Jenson Button bumped into the back of Narain Karthikeyan damaging his front wing and both had to pit for repairs rejoining at the back of the grid. Narain was fighting for position and Button accepted his mistake later.
Alonso started to pull away a steady gap from Perez and Hamilton with Rosberg on a distant fourth. Hamilton could not challenge either Perez or Alonso. The battle was going on behind the top four with Vettel cruising towards Rosberg followed by Raikkonen and Webber.
As the track started to dry out Perez started to pick up pace cutting almost a second a lap on Alonso while Hamilton remained almost constant with his pace. Vettel made a clean move on Rosberg on the straights and making it stick. Few laps latter Raikkonen and Webber overtook the struggling Mercedes of Rosberg on the outside.
The final stint of the race was getting even hotter as the predicted rains kept away and all drivers had go in for dry tyres. Perez got even stronger and started to close in on Alonso and almost caught him with 7laps to go but a slight mistake made him slide away loosing 5secs. Reigning champion Vettel (Red Bull) who was running 4th had a incident with back marker Narain Karthikeyan which resulted with a puncture for the Red Bull.
Alonso handled the situation well to stay on the lead and made an emphatic win with a car that was predicted not capable to win any races this year. Perez and Hamilton crossed the line to take the other podium spots. Webber (Red Bull) came in fourth with Raikkonen (Lotus) showing strong race form in his comeback year. Bruno Senna (Williams) finished a career best 6th after a fine final push while team mate Maldonado retired with mechanical problems few laps from the end.
Force India's Paul di Resta and Nico Hulkenberg finished 7th and 9th while Vergne of Torro Rosso finishing 8th. Michael Schumacher took the final championship point by coming in 10th after a disasterous first lap touch by Grosjean which ruined the race after a fine qualifying performance. Nico Rosberg dropped down to 13th followed by Jenson Button and Filipe Massa (Ferrai).
Narain Karthikeyan finished the race ahead of team mate Pedro de La Rosa for the HRT but a penalty for Narain for the Vettel incident pushed him to the final spot of the finishers.
